The Average Age A Dog Gets Diabetes

Are you a dog owner? Have you ever thought about dogs getting diabetes? Diabetes is not just something people get; dogs can get it too. Canine diabetes is being found in dogs more and more today. Maybe it is the way we are spoiling our dogs, or like humans just one illness that we face. The good news is that it is treatable.

We generally see dogs get diabetes at the average age of six to nine years old. Some breeds of dogs are more susceptible to getting diabetes than other dogs. Female dogs are more likely to develop diabetes than the males.
But, diabetes needs to be treated and managed in dogs just like human’s because without proper care it can lead to major problems.

If diabetes is left untreated, your dog can get cataracts, liver and bladder problems. The dog can get weak, and even go into a coma. But, before a dog can be treated you need to know what to look for as a symptom of diabetes. If you notice your dog having frequent urination and excessive drinking habits, you may need to get them checked. Other symptoms to look for are weight loss, lethargy, weakness, loss of appetite, vomiting, and dehydration.

Once you see these symptoms it is important to get your dog started on treatments. Dogs are treated for diabetes with daily insulin and diet. The diet will play a big role in keeping your dog healthy. So, if your dog is around six to nine years old and is suffering from these symptoms; you will need to take them to the vet immediately to get them checked out. Don’t wait too long since your dog’s health depends on getting the needed treatments, as well as eating a healthy diet to manage their diabetes.
